decreases, thyroid hormone is continued. If the nodule does not change after six months, aspiration is
epeated. Malignant FNA results should lead to immediate surgery.
• Lesions larger than 3 cm (1¼ in.), especially rapidly growing ones, are more likely to be lymphoma or
anaplastic thyroid carcinoma . FNA may be satisfactory for diagnosis of anaplastic cancer, but the diagnosis
of lymphoma of the thyroid may require a larger cutting needle or open biopsy .
